T.H. Payne Challenge Cup
The T.H. Payne Challenge Cup for Red Polls was first presented in 1939.
History of the T.H. Payne Challenge Cup
In 1933 the Red Poll Cattle Breeders' Association of Australasia decided to establish a perpetual challenge cup in memory of the late Mr. T H Payne (1862-1932) who had been the association’s former president.
‘Australian born’ cattle
As a hobby, Payne ran a stud at Woodburn at Kyneton and spared no expense in the development of his Red Polls by importing quality breeding stock from England. Mr Payne then developed the herd with his own breeding of ‘Australian born’ cattle. He also bred Ryeland sheep and was a member of the Victorian Parliament from 1901-1928.
Given Payne’s interest in local breeding, it makes sense that the winning Red Poll had to be a pair, male and female, of any age and ‘Australian-bred’ by the exhibitor.

The Competition
Although the class was first presented in 1934, this particular trophy has been used for the award since 1939.
The first winners in this early period were bred by Mr O. E. McLean, Dr Arnold Caddy, Mr J. McIntosh (who had worked for Mr Payne) for two years, and Mr P. E. Evans.
From 1986, the T. H. Payne Memorial Challenge Cup changed from being awarded to the best male and female pair to the exhibitor who had shown and bred the best two bulls. Additionally, the bulls must now be under 20 months old.
