Meet Florence Monod
Mrs Florence Monod was the Chief Stewardess of the Art, Craft & Cookery Competition for fifteen years from 1932 - 1947.
Born Florence (Flora) Brown, she was a nursing sister and later acting matron at St Kilda Road Base Hospital. Much of Florence Monod's life was spent working for charitable and patriotic causes. She was instrumental in establishing the canteen in 1939 at the Army and RAAF Showgrounds camp. Described as an 'energetic' and far-seeing Chief Stewardess' Monod was responsible for changing the title of Women's Industries to Home Crafts, which opened the competition up to male participants. (Weekly Times, 7 September 1947) The Florence Monod Memorial Trophy was created in 1948 to honour her service to the RASV and in particular to the Home Crafts Section.
