For more than a decade Bob Morgan, as RASV public relations manager, sold the fun and excitement of the Royal Melbourne Show to families across Victoria.
With no formal experience and only the briefest of tutoring from his predecessor, Bob freely admitted to being “scared stiff” when fronting his first media conference on the opening day of the 1964 Melbourne Show. But his friendly, open and straightforward approach soon won him the respect of media representatives across the board and earned him the moniker of “Mr Show”.
After retiring, Bob maintained a keen interest in the RASV and the Melbourne Show, which lead him to co-author the first volume and write the follow up volume of Speed the Plough, the official history of the society and the show.
He also penned The Showies – Revelations of Australia’s Outdoor Side-Showmen, the true life accounts of seven legendary showmen, which he produced from taped interviews taken over a number of years at capital city shows around Australia.
While clearing his office desk on the final day on the job in October 1977, Bob was asked by a colleague to sum up the past decade or so in the PR role. With his familiar broad grin, Bob responded by offering the theme line from Irving Berlin’s classic musical score……. “There’s no business like show business”.
