Garryowen 1947
Overview of the Garryowen competition at the Royal Melbourne Show in 1947.
The 1947 Garryowen was won by Miss Kathleen Lucas and Seafarer. This was her first Garryowen win. She went on to win the event again in 1949 riding Treasure. Both of Kath’s mounts were grey.
To date there have been only 14 winners of the Garryowen riding grey horses.
- 1936 The Sailor and Miss Phyllis Bray
- 1940 Invader and Eileen Bartram
- 1941 Mrs. H Coffey riding Colorado, Mrs. Coffey is in the Garryowen Hall of Fame.
- 1946 Colorado won again with Mrs. C Scott. This was Mrs. Scotts first time competing in the Garryowen.
- 1947 Seafarer with Miss Kath Lucas
- 1949 Treasure Miss Kath Lucas, is in the Garryowen Hall of Fame
- 1950 Cooee with Mrs. Frank Hopkins
- 1955 Statesman Miss Nan Monkivitch
- 1960 Alpine Bridget Macintyre
- 1976 Impact Miss Fiona Williams, the youngest winner of the Garryowen at the time. (Garryowen rider entry age is 18 years old)
- 1992 & 1994 Ark Royal Ms. Caroline Wagner, Garryowen Hall of Fame
- 2006 WS Imagine Ms. Pam Ahern
- 2008 Warwind Ms. Shae Hanger. Ms. Hanger is in the Garryowen Hall of Fame and is also the great grandniece of Violet Murrell.
