Melbourne Royal Community Acknowledgement - October 2026

The Melbourne Royal Board, management and staff were saddened to learn of the recent passing of Ian Bucknall on 14 October 2026.

Ian’s association with Melbourne Royal spanned more than 60 years and reflected a lifelong commitment to agriculture, livestock excellence and the organisation he cared deeply about. Beginning as a sheep exhibitor in 1962, he remained actively involved with the Melbourne Royal Show until 2008 and became one of the most respected figures within the sheep industry.

Elected to Council in 1986, Ian brought significant expertise in Poll Dorset sheep and a genuine interest in all aspects of Melbourne Royal’s operations. He also served on the Sheep and Beef Cattle Committees, championing both industry development and the preservation of heritage sheep breeds at the Show.

Ian served as a Vice President from 1990 to 1995 and was one of Melbourne Royal’s inaugural Directors when the Board was established in 1993, serving until his retirement in 2012. He was also instrumental in establishing the Australian International Beer Awards, an achievement of which he was particularly proud.

In recognition of his outstanding service, Ian was appointed an Honorary Life Member and Life Councillor in 2012 and was awarded the President’s Medal in 2024. He also played a pivotal role in reinvigorating the Heritage Committee, remaining an active contributor until 2024.

Ian will be remembered not only for his contribution to Melbourne Royal, but also for his counsel and unwavering support of the agricultural community. On behalf of Melbourne Royal, we extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends.

In 2015, he became the inaugural recipient of the Beef Cattle Hall of Fame Award, acknowledging his exceptional commitment and lasting impact on the success of the Melbourne Royal Show.

Brian will be remembered not only for his dedication and leadership, but also for his kindness, generosity and genuine passion for the Beef Cattle Competition and the people involved in it. His contribution has left an enduring legacy that will remain an important part of Melbourne Royal's story.

On behalf of Melbourne Royal, we extend our sincere condolences to Brian's wife, Robyn, and his family.
